This recipe has been a family favorite for at least four generations. These can be baked in disposable pie time and frozen. Great for a breakfast cake, as well!

Preheat oven to 350°F

Crumb together flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and shortening.

Reserve 1 cup of crumb mixture for topping cakes.

Stir baking soda into buttermilk.
- 5
Add buttermilk mixture and beaten eggs to remaining crumb mixture.

Divide batter into four 8 inch cake pans.

Divide and sprinkle reserved crumb mixture on top of four cakes.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
