Tamale Pie

This is a dish my mother used to make often. Loved it. When I joined the Navy I was surprised to find that this is a long time Navy recipe. She learned it from her father who was a cook in the navy during WWII. I still make this often and think of my mother every time.

Steps
- 1
Put onion and beef in skillet. Cook till meat is browned.
- 2
Strain away fat
- 3
Place beef and onions back in pan, add corn, kidney beans and taco seasoning. Add a little extra water than the taco seasoning calls for.
- 4
After letting simmer for a few minutes place mixture in a large glass baking dish. Mixture should be about 1-1/2 inches thick or so.
- 5
Prepare cornbread batter and carefully cover the meat mixture with batter.
- 6
Bake to the instructions on cornbread. When its done slice and enjoy.
- 7
This is quick, easy, and inexpensive. The US Navy has been serving this for a very long time. I love this dish. You will too. Add cheese under cornbread if u like. Very yummy.
