Ingredients

  1. 3 3/4 cupschocolate cake mix (about 500 grams)
  2. 8eggs
  3. 1/3 cupoil
  4. 1 cupwater
  5. 1large can evaporated milk
  6. 1 can(about 12.7 oz/360 grams) sweetened condensed milk
  7. 6.7 ozcream cheese (about 190 grams)
  8. 1 1/4 cupsgranulated sugar (about 250 grams)
  9. 1 splashvanilla extract

    In a skillet, add the sugar and stir over medium heat until it melts and turns a light brown caramel color.

  2. 2

    Remove from heat before it hardens and pour the caramel into a buttered cake pan, spreading it evenly over the bottom.

  3. 3

    To prepare the cake layer, combine the cake mix, 3 eggs, oil, and water. Mix well and pour into the pan over the caramel.

  4. 4

    For the flan, blend the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, 5 eggs, cream cheese, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  5. 5

    Carefully pour the flan mixture over the cake batter, making sure not to mix the layers together.

  6. 6

    Slowly add the flan mixture with a ladle so it gently seeps through the cake batter. Some of the milk mixture may remain on top, but it will settle as it bakes.

  7. 7

    Bake in a water bath (bain-marie) for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean.
