On a medium low heat stove, using a small pan, heat the oil and put the bay leaf, cinnamon stick and cardamom in. Cook for about 1 minute.

Add the onions, and cook until they are translucent. Then add the nuts. Cook for about 3 minutes then set aside. Be careful not to burn the onions.

If you are using a rice cooker or stove, on medium heat, bring to a boil the 1 1/2 cups of water or broth, and then add the rice and salt to taste. Bring the heat down to medium low, stir and let it cook for 2 - 3 minutes Add the nut & raisin mix with 1/2 tspn of sugar. Let it cook until rice is tender & all water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve 😋
