Sagun

Introducing our traditional snack to our teen kids for the very first time 🥇. The youngest one, whose daily staple includes bread, pasta, meat and anything-potatoes, gave a blank look 🙄. The other one, who loves Asian food, gave a positive smile 😊. She thinks it's nice and she likes it sweeter.

Sagun is a sweet powdery snack. Avoid talking when u take a spoonful in your mouth 😁 Your tongue will instinctively mix it inside your mouth before the sweet powder slowly melt.

I remember ingredients used to make Sagun were readily available back then. The only thing we had to buy was sugar. We had coconut trees around us, we had Padi Rice fields (we processed our own rice), cocoa field, rubber, pepper berries, fruit orchards and vegetable garden around the house (even coffee trees!!) We hunted our own food too. The houses and long houses were built close to the river. Now, we read a lot abt off-grid living & my people/tribes are born into one. We r called the 'Sea Dayak' of Borneo, as we settle close to the river and sea. Those who settle deep inland r called the 'Land Dayak' tribe. Things r different now. We have electricity in the village (though there are still villages without one). Running tap water however, is still not available. We still collect rain water for drinking and use water from the river for many other things 😊 Memories and stories that never fail to amaze my teen kids 🤣 they said 'you r very lucky, mama!'

Indeed 🥰🙏🏻

Steps

  1. 1

Place the coconut in a large skillet/deep pan or a wok, and cook without oil over medium-low heat for few minutes, stirring continuously until the coconut is light brown. Remove from the pan and cool completely. Remove from the heat and keep aside.
