Masala Chai Cookies

A sip of hot tea and a bite of masala chai cookies
Its been a while since my last post, I was busy traveling with family to some wonderful places... feels good to be back in my kitchen!
Today's recipe has totally been inspired by my travel, hope you enjoy reading and making it!
Set deep in the Nilgiri hills, traditionally known as Udhagamandalam this once small quaint and quiet town; now popularly know as Ooty is bustling with tourists, trekkers and honeymooners all throughout the year!
A slight chill in the air, pots of hot tea, unforgettable train journey from Ooty to Coonoor through the misty ‘Blue Mountains’ made this hectic weekend trip all worth it.
The Highlight of this trip was a visit to a Tea Factory in Coonoor
Removing the moisture from the the plucked tea leaves
Crushing the tea leaves
After completing the visit I got to taste different varieties of tea manufactured and exported by this company namely- masala, chocolate, ginger and strong tea.
After all the tea tasting I could not resist, I had to pick up some tea; my pick was Masala Chai.
This visit was not only memorable but also very inspirational...... a super idea struck me (I think its super) thought of mixing chai in my regular cookie dough. With a sudden burst of enthusiasm I just could not wait to come home and try these.... Masala chai infused cookies.
Imagine .... very time I crave for some tea I could grab a cookie or just make some tea and have both together :P
Here's how I made it:

Steps

  1. 1

Finely ground the tea in a mixer/ grinder.

  2. 2

Mix all purpose flour (maida), salt, and ground tea in a bowl. Set aside.

  3. 3

Beat the butter and powdered sugar until blended; add the egg and lime zest.

  4. 4

Gradually add the flour mixture until well blended.

  5. 5

Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes.

  6. 6

Remove the dough from the fridge, roll the dough with hand into 1 inch balls, flatten and place on a baking tray.

  7. 7

I thought of adding some designs... easy way to separate husbands and my share :P

  8. 8

Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius; bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a rack and cool.

  9. 9

Store in an air tight container. The fresh tea (packed in front of me) gives these cookies a slight spicy flavour.
