Steps
- 1
Preheat oven to 190C. Peel, core and cut apples into chunks. Use a mixture of apples for best taste and texture.
- 2
Place apples in pan with cinnamon, cloves and sugar, do not over sweeten, I used 2 tablespoons in mine. Cover with lid. Over low heat bring slowly to boil. Stir occasionally, don't allow to burn. Turn off heat.
- 3
Place flour in bowl, add butter, cut in to chunks. Gently, using fingertips, rub butter into flour mix until mixture resembles breadcrumbs, stir in oats and sugar.
- 4
Place apples in ovenproof dish (remove cloves), you do not need much juice, just enough to moisten apples, sprinkle raisins over top.
- 5
Gently spoon topping evenly over apples, place dish on baking tray.
- 6
Place in pre heated oven for 20-30 minutes until top is browned.
- 7
Serve with lashings of custard or cream or ice cream. Beware, filling is hot..
- 8
Adjust spices in filling to your own taste, I somtimes use ground ginger instead of cinnamon.
- 9
You can substitute your favourite muesli for the oats.
- 10
You can use cooked plums, rhubarb or mixed berries instead of apples.
