This is my mom's favorite dessert, and since she was coming to visit us in England, I decided to make it for her myself—and it turned out amazing!

Set aside 1 cup of the milk and pour the rest into a saucepan with the lemon peel, cinnamon stick, sugar, and ground cinnamon (optional; we love cinnamon, so we add a little extra for more flavor). Heat over low heat for about 10 minutes to infuse the flavors.

Add the cornstarch to the reserved cup of milk and mix well until completely dissolved. Add the vanilla extract (optional).

Strain the infused milk, then add the milk with the dissolved cornstarch. Mix well and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and becomes creamy. Once ready, pour the mixture into a dish and cover with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate overnight.

After chilling, remove the set milk from the dish and cut it into squares or rectangles, as you prefer. Dredge each piece in flour, then dip in beaten egg, and fry in plenty of hot oil until golden.

Drain on paper towels, then coat each piece in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
