Crab Legs

My kids are on vacation, so I took the opportunity to share this recipe with you all. I hope you enjoy it!

Crab legs can be boiled, baked, or steamed. They are very popular here in the US, come from the Pacific, and are sold frozen. At home, we prefer them steamed—they turn out more tender and are perfect for serving with different dips. The frozen crab legs you find at the supermarket look like the ones in the photo, with lots of meat.

Steps

15 minutes
  1. 1

Buy crab legs. To steam them, fill a large stainless steel pot with about 10 quarts (about 9.5 liters) of water. The water should stay below the steamer basket or colander that you'll place over the pot to steam the crab legs. Make sure the colander is secure so it doesn't fall into the pot.

  2. 2

When the water is boiling, place the crab legs on the colander and steam for 5 to 10 minutes. Add salt to the water.

  3. 3

To boil frozen crab legs: You can add flavor to the legs with spices or fresh herbs, lemon and garlic, or even dark ale beer (which is used in one of the most popular recipes for Drunken Alaskan King Crab Legs).

  4. 4

Fish seasonings or seafood spices are also commonly used to add flavor.

  5. 5

Don't forget the dips! Classic options include clarified butter, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, a vinaigrette, or butter with fresh herbs.
