Dropzopie: Dutch sailor's booze
It’s believed that dropzopie is invented around 1780 in Schiedam, a Dutch town famous for it's production of Jenever.
The alcoholic drink is traditionally created by distilling malt wine and adding juniper berries, liquorice root and star anise for flavor.
Back in the day it was known as a liquor that fishermen used at sea. It was believed that the combination of herbs and spices would keep people healthy in the often harsh conditions.
In the 80’s it made a resurgence within the Netherlands when Amsterdam based distillery Bols reissued the original recipe as 'Bols Black'.
In 2015 the drink made waves in the mixology community when Dutch bartender Tess Posthumus used it during the Diageo World Class mixing competition. Since then cocktails based on the liquor have appeared in high-end bars around the world.
