Ingredients

1 serving
  1. 115 grams (4 ounces)thin beef steak (or cube steak in USA)
  2. 6-8large cooked prawns (shrimp)
  3. 3 sliceswhite bread
  4. 1/2onion (halved again)
  5. 3-4baby tomatoes (halved)
  6. 1-2 slicesCheddar cheese
  7. 2 tablespoonsgroundnut oil (or similar)
  8. As neededPhiladelphia original soft cheese
  9. As neededmixed salad leaves
  10. As neededlemon juice
  11. To tasteketchup
  12. To tasteThousand Island dressing
  13. To tastesalt and black pepper to season
  14. ⚫
  15. ⚫ Steak Seasoning⚫
  16. 2 teaspoonspaprika
  17. 2 teaspoonsblack pepper
  18. 1 teaspoonfine sea salt
  19. 1/2 teaspooncumin
  20. 1 Pinchgarlic powder

Steps

  1. 1

    Put the prawns in a ramekin or small bowl and drizzle with the lemon juice. Sprinkle with salt and stir

    Allow prawns to marinate for at least 30 minutes while you prepare the rest of your sandwich

  3. 3

    Remove the crusts from the bread, toast on both sides, then decide which is going to be your top, middle, and bottom slice

    Smear one side of the bottom slice with a thick layer of the Philadelphia cheese and season

  5. 5

    Add the lettuce to the middle slice, drizzle with the Thousand Island dressing, then add the tomatoes. Add the oil to a skillet and bring to a medium-high heat.

    Mix the steak seasoning

    Slice the steak into strips...

    ... and season generously on both sides with the steak seasoning

    Add to the skillet mixed with the onions and cook for about 2½ minutes turning every 20-30 seconds. Arrange into a shape roughly that of your bread and drizzle generously with ketchup

    Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the cheese slice. Cover with a pan lid for about 2 minutes until the cheese melts

    Remove from the pan and place on the bottom slice of toast

    Add the prawns to the skillet and remove from the heat. Sit the middle slice of bread on top of the cheese steak

    Turn the prawns. When they're warmed through, remove from the skillet and add to the lettuce and tomatoes

    Add the lid and serve

I'm a designer/artist and I learned to cook when I started making my own Chinese food over 30 years ago. I'm a lover of my native British food, but recently I've developed a taste for American comfort food, especially sandwiches and BBQ (watching too much 'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives' probably). 😸 Unfortunately, we don't have any independent US-style diners or drive-ins in my neck of the woods, so I had to learn from recipe books and the Food Network. I'll also be publishing some traditional UK classics in case any non-Brits want to have a crack at Brit grub.
