Shirvale is a authentic traditional dish made in the Kokan villages (Maharastra, India) with Rice / Ragi or  Nachni(finger millet) flour and served with sweetened jaggery flavoured coconut milk. It is one tedious recipe. Ingredients

1 hr apprx
2 people
  1. 1 cupRice flour
  2. 2 cupsWater(Boiling hot)
  3. 2 tbspOil For Coconut milk
  4. 1 cupgrated Coconut
  5. 1/4 cupsgrated Jaggery.(can b increased or decreased as per individual taste)
  6. 1/2 tspCardamom powder
  7. 1/2 tspjeera/cumin seeds
  8. pinchSalt

Steps

    For making the shirvalya
    Take a vessel bring water to boil.
    To this,add a salt and oil
    When the water starts boiling add the rice flour, give a quick stir, switch off the gas and cover the vessels with a lid. mix it well and make round balls

  2. 2

    Take a big kadai with water. When the water boils put the above rice balls in the water.They will sink in the water. After some time they will start floating that means they are done.

  3. 3

    When they are hot still hot and put them in sev press and press out thin noodles on a banana leaf or a greased plate.Domthe same process with all the rice balls.

  4. 4

    For making the coconut Ras grind grated coconut and jeera to fine paste.Seive through a strainer or cotton cloth.Extract all the Ras from the coconut paste.Then add jaggery and cardamom powder.Stir it the jaggery is dissolved.For serving soak the hot shirvalye in coconut Ras..I have accompanied it with mix veg kurma.This is how it is served in my family from ages..

I am from Bangalore. It is rare that people use ragi flour to make shavige. Happy to see another one use ragi for it. Making the ragi flour itself is tedious. The dish is however healthy
