Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns are spiced sweet buns which are usually eaten on Good Friday. These burns are prepared using raisins and a cross is put on top which represents the crucification of Jesus and that is why they are called hot cross buns.
These mildly sweet buns go really well with butter, jam or marmalade with a cup of tea or coffee. It is served with easter meals.
They are usually prepared during Easter festival but these days they are found all year round in the bakeries.

Ingredients

  1. 3/4 cupwarm milk
  2. 1 teaspoonsugar
  3. 2 teaspooninstant dry yeast
  4. 3 cupall-purpose flour
  5. 1 teaspoonsalt
  6. 1/4 cupsugar
  7. 1 teaspooncinnamon powder
  8. 1/2 teaspoonnutmeg powder
  9. 70 gmbutter
  10. 1/2 cupwarm water
  11. 1/4 cupsultanas
  12. 1/4 cupraisins
  13. For preparing cross
  14. 1/2 cupall-purpose flour
  15. 120 mlwater
  16. For glazing
  17. 2 tbsporange marmalade
  18. 1 tbspwater

    Add sugar and instant dry yeast to warm milk and leave it for 5 minutes.

    Take all-purpose flour in a bowl and add cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder, salt and sugar. Mix everything well. Now add butter and yeast mixture to it and mix everything well. Add warm water and make a soft dough. Knead it for 3 to 4 minutes until smooth and elastic. Now grease a bowl and apply some oil on the dough and leave it at room temperature for one and half hours or until double in size.

    When the dough is double in size, take it out on a lightly floured work surface and knock out the the air. Now spread it with your hands and sprinkle raisins and sultanas evenly on top. Now make a dough ball out of it and make a roll. Cut the roll into 14 equal pieces. Now with the help of your hand make round balls out of each portion and put it on a greased baking tray. Now cover it with a kitchen towel and leave it for 45 minutes or until double in size.

    To make cross on top of the buns, mix flour and water and make a thick paste. Put it in a piping bag. To glaze the buns mix marmalade and water in a bowl and microwave it for 30 seconds.

    Brush little milk over each bun and then pipe a cross with the piping bag. Bake hot cross buns in the preheated oven at 180 degree for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown on top. When they are ready, rest it for 10 minutes and then transfer it to a wire rack. Apply orange glaze over it while they are still warm. You can even apply mixture of icing sugar and milk on top instead of marmalade glazing.

    Serve hot cross buns with butter, jam or marmalade with tea or coffee or it can be even served as a part of main meal. It can be stored in an airtight container for 2 days at room temperature and for a week in the refrigerator.
