This is the Bengali style Banana Blossom Curry which in Bengali is called Mocha'aur Ghonto. Mocha means Banana Blossom in Bengali.
This is the way my Kakima/ aunt cooks and I learnt it from her and it is her recipe which she learnt from her mom.
She's an expert in cooking, once anyone eats food cooked by her, knowone can forget her.
I don't need anything with rice the day this is cooked

Steps

1 hr
  1. 1

Clean the banana blossom, take out the brown bracts one by one and remove the cluster of flowers from each layer till you reach the inner portion where the flowers are young, no need to take it out. Chop this portion finely, for the flowers clean it by removing the pistil (the hardest stick like structure) and the Calyx or free tepal (translucent flap like part). After everything is cleaned, chop the flowers or you can chop after boiling also.

  2. 2

Sprinkle salt and Turmeric and mix, let it rest for few hours or overnight. After that put it in a colander and wash it thoroughly and boil for 20-30 minutes. Drain & Discard the water.

  3. 3

Grind the onion, ginger and garlic, Cummin & coriander seeds into fine paste together. In the same jar again make a paste of the tomato.

  4. 4

Heat oil in a kadai, add the bay leaf and cinnamon stick. Once it crackles, add the Onion mixed paste and saute it. Add the soaked Chana/ Bengal Gram and bhunno it. Then add the tomato puree and bhunno it, add salt and turmeric powder too. After 10-15 minutes add the grated coconut and bhunno it more. Then add the boiled and cooked banana Blossom and cook it further for 10-15 minutes.

  5. 5

At the end when its about to be done, add ghee. Sugar and Garam masala powder and mix it well, cover and cook for 5 minutes more for the flavours to infuse. Put off the flame and Let it stand for 5-10 minutes before you serve. I love it with steamed rice.
