The popular Punjabi style " Urad Dal " Dal Dish !
This is a simple way to prepare delicious Dal Makhni!
Soak the Dal overnight or for 6-7 hours. You can either slow cook for 1:30 -2:00 hrs slowly if you have time but if you don't have time and you want to save fuel then pressure cook it for 6-7 whistles and let the pressure release by itself. Meanwhile start preparing the ingredients for the second part of cooking which gives the flavour to the Dal.
It's great for main course in Indian Food theme party with any type of Naan, Kulchas, Tandoori Roti and even our homemade Roti/ Chapati/ Phulkas.

Ingredients

  • 150 gmsWhole Black Urad Dal Soaked, boiled & cooked with water
  • 2 TbspsGhee
  • 3-4Garlic Chopped
  • 1Onion Chopped
  • 1-2 tbspsGinger Garlic paste
  • 2Tomatoes finely chopped or pureed
  • 1Spring onion chopped (optional)
  • 1/4 tspTurmeric powder
  • 1 TspKashmiri LAL Mirch powder
  • 1/4 tspGaram masala powder
  • as per tasteSalt
  • 2-3 tbspsButter
  • To Garnish
  • 2 -3 tbsps Fresh Cream / Cooking Cream
  • As neededButter

    Once the Dal is cooked in either of the ways- slow cooked or pressure cooked and ingredients ready. Heat ghee in a kadai. Add the garlic first and saute it, no need to brown. Add the onion and saute it when it about to start turning brown, add in the ginger garlic paste and saute it. Add turmeric and Chilli powder too. Add little water to prevent the spices from burning and bhunno it further.

    Add the tomato and bhunno it, add salt too. Cook till the ghee seperates from the gravy. In the process add the chopped spring onion too if you are adding it, else skip. Add in the cooked Dal and cook further for another 20-30 minutes, till the Dal thickens up and flavor gets infused. Check consistency of the Dal, adjust accordingly. Check salt. In the process of cooking add butter & Garam masala too. Serve hot with Roti/ Paratha or any flatbreads, it goes well with rice & Jeera rice too.
