Indori Poha

Indori poha is a very popular and famous breakfast dish from the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is prepared using thick poha / flattened rice. This poha is topped with spicy sev or farsan and jeeravan (special spice mix) which makes it different from our regular poha. This spicy, tangy, a little sweet and chatpata Indori poha is a treat in itself.

To make instant jeeravan masala, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and keep it aside.

Wash poha 2 times with water and keep it in a colander. Add turmeric, sugar and salt to it and mix it lightly. Now steam this poha for 5 to 8 minutes.

Heat oil in a pan and add groundnuts. When they turn pink, add mustard seeds and let it crackle. Now add hing, cumin seeds, fennel seeds and curry leaves. Add finely chopped onion and green chillies. Saute until light pink. Now add poha to it and give it a good mix. Cook it on medium heat for or 5 minutes. Add lemon juice, mix it well and turn off the heat. Taste and add some more salt if needed.

To serve Indori poha, take some poha in a plate and sprinkle some jeeravan masala on top. Add onion, pomegranate seeds, ratlami sev, boondi and coriander leaves on top. Lastly sprinkle some more jeeravan spice mix.

Serve delicious Indori poha as a breakfast along with tea or coffee.
