Philly cheesesteak

#CookpadApron2026 This recipe is a fond tribute to my childhood. I love a good cheesesteak sandwich. When I was a kid, my dad traveled for work, and sometimes I got to tag along during school breaks. The best cheesesteak of my life was in New Jersey — loaded with Cheez Whiz, from a little place called The Dog House right next to some railroad tracks. I know I’ll never recreate that exact one, but I still smile every time I think about it.
This recipe gives me that same cozy feeling. It holds together, the juices don’t soak the bun, and you can use provolone or go full nostalgia with Cheez Whiz.

Steps
- 1
Cook the beef
Add the shaved steak to a large sauté pan. Cook over medium‑high heat for 4–5 minutes. - 2
Add vegetables
Stir in the diced onions and peppers. Continue cooking until the beef is fully cooked. - 3
Drain
Drain any excess fat from the pan, then return the pan to the stove. - 4
Add seasonings & gravy
Pour in the 1 cup of water, then add the gravy mix, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until the liquid has fully reduced and no moisture remains in the bottom of the pan. - 5
Remove from heat
Take the pan off the burner. - 6
Add mayo & cheese
Stir in the mayonnaise and shredded cheese until everything is well combined and melted. - 7
Serve
Spoon the mixture onto sub buns. Add extra mayo, peppers or additional cheese if you like. Enjoy.
