Aromatic healthy tomato soup

Chilly winter. I have severe cold and cough. Decided to try mom’s hot spicy tomato lentil soup-South Indian rasam. Black garlic rasam will keep all these health problems at bay. White garlic becomes black garlic through Maillard reaction, the color, taste and smell of garlic change. Black garlic does not have the pungent taste; it is sweet. Even those who don't like the smell of garlic will love it. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, good for heart. It controls blood sugar levels, All the ingredients in this recipe have these benefits. Tomatoes are from my garden. The soup is loaded with healthy nutrients, aroma colorful, flavorful and etc. Drink it and feel good.

Prepare a checklist. Keep essential items close by. You can buy the rasa powder from Indian grocery store. However I made it myself with a blend of roasted spices -cumin, coriander, black pepper, red chilies. and toor dal, chana dal. urud dal etc. my recipe is available in cookpad

Soak asafetida in 1/4c boiling water in a bowl. it would dissolve easily
Cook toor dal in a bowl with 4 cups of water in a pressure cooker. While dal is cooking, attend to the rest of chores. Follow the instructions for using pressure cooker. When dal is cooked turn off the heat. after the pressure goes down take it out of the cooker
Add mustard seeds to hot oil in a heavy saucepan over medium flame. After mustard seeds splutter stir in neem flowers, cumin seeds, red chilies, turmeric powder - 4
Add tomatoes, ginger and garlic to a blender jar with 2c of water, blend to make tomato puree. Add the tomato puree to the saucepan with tempered spices. cook over medium flame until the raw smell goes way. Add the cooked dal with water. Add 6 cups of water and bring to a boil. Bring it to boil on high flame for 10 minutes. Mix 2 tablespoons of rasa powder in 1 cup of hot water, add it to the soup and mix well

Over medium flame Continue cooking for 4-5 minutes, add salt, dissolved asafetida and mix. Turn off the stove. Add cilantro. The whole house will be filled aroma. Transfer it to a serving bowl. You may fill up a cup with nutritious aromatic flavorful tomato soup, the south Indian rasam and drink it. Or mix with rice and eat.
