In a small saucepan, combine the sweet red bean paste (either chunky or smooth), water, and brown sugar. Simmer gently over low heat.

Toast the mochi until golden and puffed.

Spoon a little of the thinned red bean soup into each bowl, add the toasted mochi, then pour more red bean soup over the top.
