Roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface, then place it on parchment paper to make it easier to transfer to the baking tray. Cut strips along the edges without cutting all the way to the center.

Place the filling lengthwise down the center of the dough braid, then start folding the strips over the filling, alternating sides.

Brush the top with the beaten egg and let it rise while the oven preheats, about 10 minutes. Bake at 350°F (180°C) until the bottom is golden, then turn on the broiler to brown the top. Serve warm.
