Easy Broiled Onigiri with Bonito Flakes and Cheese

I came up with this easy rice dish that is perfect for breakfast. When eating onigiri, my husband always asks me to make these. My kids love cheese. This gave me the idea to combine these ingredients together.

Freshly cooked rice is good to use, but you can also reheat leftover rice in the microwave. If the flavor is weak, add salt to taste. If you add too much soy sauce, the rice balls will become too wet to pack tightly. It might be easier if you use sliced cheese. For 4-5 rice balls. Recipe by chikappe

Ingredients

  1. 3rice bowls' worth Plain cooked rice
  2. 2packs Bonito flakes
  3. 1 tbspSoy sauce
  4. 1 tbspShiro-dashi
  5. 1Easy melting cheese

Steps

  1. 1

    Add soy sauce and shiro-dashi to the bonito flakes and mix.

    Add flavored bonito flakes to the white rice, and blend evenly with a rice paddle.

    Pack rice into triangles. Shape into desired sizes (I made 5 rice balls). Place rice balls on an oiled aluminum foil.

    Sprinkle easy melting cheese on top, taking care not to spill, and pop them in a toaster oven.

    Once the cheese has browned to a golden finish, they're ready to serve. The addition of cheese fortifies the rice with more calcium.

    Try packing the centers with cheese or salmon.
