Ingredients

4 servings
  • 3 cupswater
  • 1 cupwhole milk
  • 2-3 Tablespoonsbutter
  • 1 cuproasted maize rava/grits
  • to tastesalt and cracked black pepper
  • 2 handfulsshredded cheddar cheese
  • chopped crispy bacon
  • 500-1 kgpeeled and deveined shrimp
  • 1chopped medium onion
  • 3 Tablespoonschopped red pepper
  • 3 clovesminced garlic
  • 1/2 cupchopped green onions/scallions

Steps

  1. 1

    Bring the water, butter, and milk to a boil.

  2. 2

    Stir in your maize/grits and turn down the temperature to medium low.

  3. 3

    Add your salt and pepper to taste stirring until it absorbs the water for 10-15 minutes. If it's too thick add water or milk it will look like porridge.

  4. 4

    Remove the grits and stir in your cheese. (set aside covered)

  5. 5

    On medium heat cook the bacon until crispy. Leave the bacon grease in the pan.

  6. 6

    On medium heat add onions, red peppers and garlic in the bacon grease and cook until soft.

  7. 7

    Add in your shrimp with seasonings and stir until the shrimp turns pink. Try not to overcook the shrimp or they become rubbery.

  8. 8

    Place the grits in a bowl or plate and pour the shrimp mixture on top. Garnished with green onions and bacon.

  9. 9

    Enjoy!

    Recipe notes: Use any cheese you like. Add in your own seasonings to taste. For a creamier texture use milk instead of water.
