Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and carrots and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds more. For a more flavourful dish, you may also add the chilli pepper here.

Stir in the orzo and cook for 1 minute, until lightly toasted.

Add the tomato sauce or puree, vegetable broth, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the orzo is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

If you like, stir in some fresh basil before serving.
