Heat butter, oil, 1 garlic clove, Bay leaf, and half of the basil leaves on low.

Add thinly sliced onions and cook gently for 45 min, or until mostly clear.

Add beef broth and bring to slow simmer.

Reduce heat, add wine, second garlic clove, and remaining basil.

Simmer on low heat for 30 min

Place slices of bread in oven with choice of sliced or shredded cheese on top.

Place a slice of cheesy bread on top of each persons bowl of soup!
