Mix all the ingredients for the dumplings together and set aside while you make the sauce. The batter will be sticky.

For the Sauce: Melt the butter and blend in the flour, sugar, and salt. slowly add the water, whisking the whole time to avoid lumps.

Add the vanilla and bring to a boil.

As soon as it boils, add golf ball size blobs of the dumpling dough to it, turn it down to low, and cover for 15 minutes.

Serve hot, and very tasty with unwhipped whip cream poured over top.
