There are a few versions of this recipe out there but a family friend shared this with me in 1979 and I haven't changed it since.

The recipe calls for cherry pie filling but blueberry or raspberry pie filling will work just as well.

This freezes well, too, so you can save some for later!

Although they are called Holiday Squares you certainly don't need a holiday to bake them :)

Ingredients

40 mins
  1. 1 1/2 cupssugar
  2. 1 cupbutter
  3. 4eggs
  4. 2 cupsflour
  5. 1/4 teaspoonsalt
  6. 1 teaspoonbaking soda
  7. 1 teaspoonvanilla extract
  8. 1 1/2 poundcan cherry pie filling
  9. Confectionary sugar, sifted

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. 2

    Grease and flour a 15x8x2 inch pan.

  3. 3

    Beat sugar and butter until light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.

  5. 5

    Add flour, salt, baking soda, and vanilla and mix well.

  6. 6

    Pour into prepared pan and smooth top with spatula.

  7. 7

    Spoon one tablespoon of pie filling on top of batter to make approximately 20 squares (about 4 spoonfuls across the shorter end of the pan and 5 spoonfuls down the longer end of the pan. Then fill it in.).

  8. 8

    Bake for 40 - 50 minutes, but start checking for doneness at 40 minutes with a toothpick.

  9. 9

    Cool pan on a wire rack.

  10. 10

    When cool, lightly cover with sifted confectionary sugar and cut into 20 squares.
