This recipe has been used for the past few years every Chinese New Year in my house :)
So, my mom asked me to keep using this recipe so the taste remains familiar to the rest of the family.. haha
Usually, it's not me who makes it, but my mom.. this year it's my turn.. because mom is tired, she's getting older, and making nastar is exhausting, especially since she also cooks several other dishes..
I made about 350 pieces to fill the jars, from 11 AM to 4 PM.. haha.. with some snacking in between (it takes 5 hours to make, but it will disappear in less than an hour!)
My oven is very small.. so I had to bake in batches.. haha.. when will I have a big oven?
And there was an accident with one tray that got burnt.. oh well, I'll just eat it myself.. it still tastes good, just looks bad.
In Chinese New Year beliefs, these round, bright yellow, and sweet nastar symbolize sweet blessings and prosperity, especially if they are filled with lots of jam, which is believed to bring more blessings :) amen!!!
Let's get to the recipe!

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cupbutter (I used Orchid)
  2. 1/2 cupmargarine (I used Blueband)
  3. 2egg yolks
  4. 1egg white
  5. 3/4 cuppowdered sugar (about 100 grams)
  6. 1/3 cuppowdered milk (about 40 grams)
  7. 3 3/4 cupsall-purpose flour (about 475 grams)
  8. Optional: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or milk essence
  9. cloves

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Beat the butter, margarine, sugar, and eggs together until pale and fluffy.

  2. 2

Add the sifted flour and milk powder mixture, then mix with a spatula until well combined. The dough is ready to use :)

  3. 3

Take a small amount of dough, flatten it, fill with pineapple jam, and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (I used a non-stick baking sheet).

  4. 4

Pierce each ball with a clove, then bake for 15 minutes at 320°F (160°C).

  5. 5

Remove from the oven and brush with egg yolk.

  6. 6

Bake again until fully cooked, about another 15 minutes at 300°F (150°C). (Oven temperatures may vary, adjust accordingly.)

  7. 7

Tadaaa, the result is crispy yet soft :)
It's sturdier but not dense.. haha
    It's all about personal preference.

  8. 8

My back and neck are sore from rolling about 350 pieces of nastar by myself.. haha.. but it's worth it :D

  9. 9

In my family, for Chinese New Year, nastar cookies must be homemade, not store-bought.. haha..

  10. 10

    The aroma is nostalgic :)
It takes a long time to make but is eaten quickly.. haha

  11. 11

Hmm.. the aroma of homemade nastar is different from store-bought, the butter, margarine, and milk smell stronger and fresher.. compared to those that have been in jars for months.. ;)

  12. 12

    How to Make the Jam:
Cook pineapple, cinnamon sticks, and cloves until the water reduces and the mixture becomes slightly sticky, then add sugar. Stir until the water evaporates, and the mixture becomes jam that can be shaped.
    INGREDIENTS:
    - 1 Palembang pineapple, peeled, grated or blended
    - sugar to taste
    - 2 cinnamon sticks
    - 3 cloves

  13. 13

    Yummy
