Add 2tbsp of oil in a cooker and let heat.. add cumin seeds..now add chopped garlic, ginger green chillies, onions as per the measures and saute till garlic and onions turn light brown..

Add chopped tomatoes (optional) and saute for 5 min..add chilli powder and turmeric powder & saute for 5 min..

Now add daal to the sauted mixture.. Add 2 cups of water or as per consistency required..Add salt.. stir well and close the lid of the cooker and cook till 1-2 whistles...

After the steam is released Open the lid and stir well..let boil for 5-10min in low flame..

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot or (season with 1-2tbspn of ghee, 1/2 tspn mustard seeds, 2tsp chopped garlic and 2 red chillies) as shown in the pic.
