I was raised on this stuff and so we’re my kids. Now my grandkids are. It’s so easy, very satisfying, and budget friendly. I think every culture in the world has their version of steak and gravy. Sometimes I make mashed potatoes and sometimes I make rice, a little veg and bread and you’re golden.

Ingredients

1.5 hrs
4 servings
  1. 1.5 lbstender beef steaks or top sirloin
  2. 1/2 cupflour for dredging
  3. Salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder
  4. Olive oil for browning
  5. 1 tbspsoy sauce
  6. 1 tbspWorcestershire sauce
  7. 1chopped onion
  8. 4 cupsBeef bullion and water or beef broth
  9. Rice:
  10. 1.5 cupsrice
  11. 3 cupsbeef broth
  12. 2 tbspbutter
  13. Dashsalt and pepper

Cooking Instructions

1.5 hrs
  1. 1

In a heavy pot, heat oil on medium high. Season your steaks, front and back, then dredge completely in flour. Brown the meat then remove from pan. Add more oil if needed to sauté your onion. Once they’re soft, add some broth to deglaze the bottom of the pan then add the steaks back in. Pour enough broth in to come up the side but not complete covering the steaks. Lower heat and simmer for an hour or longer if necessary. Allow the liquid to reduce as it cooks. It’ll thicken as it reduces.

  2. 2

To make your rice, add to a pot, add liquid, a little salt and pepper and a Pat of butter. Bring to a boil then lower heat to a low simmer and cover. Cook til it steams out. 20 minutes or so. So easy.

I'm an army brat with a Cajun mother and an Irish dad. I'm married to the love of my life, David, and we have 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren. I've been a barber for 40 years. Im an old fashioned, old school cook and my recipes are basic. I change them up all the time.Since finding out I’m diabetic I’ve had to rearrange old habits. Any recipe I have can be made the old fashioned way OR replaced with lower carb options. Just ask and I’ll tell you what has worked for me.I’m the self proclaimed queen of the leftover. I have issues with leftovers looking back at me with the same sappy look they had the day before. Can’t do it. My super power is turning what I find in my fridge into something I want to eat. I work so much better under pressure. I live for shortcuts and not having to run to the grocery every day. Work with what you have. Adapt and overcome. Also, the less dishes, bowls, and pots I hafta use, the better. Hope some of these recipes work out for ya!
