Beef Stew with Vegetables
Hanoi is getting cold again this week. There's nothing better than coming home after a long day at work and cooking a pot of fragrant, warm soup like this for dinner with the whole family!
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Clean the beef and cut it into bite-sized cubes. Marinate with 1 tsp oyster sauce and let it sit for 20 minutes.
- 2
Peel and wash the potatoes and carrots, then cut them into pieces similar in size to the beef. Clean the celery and cut it into sections.
- 3
In a deep pot, sauté the beef with a little cooking oil (add a bit of water to prevent burning). Add enough water to cover the beef, bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer until the beef is just tender (do not overcook).
- 4
Add the potatoes and carrots, season with salt and seasoning powder, and add enough water to cover. Simmer over low-medium heat until the vegetables are tender (by then, the beef will be perfectly tender).
- 5
Add the celery, increase to medium-high heat, and once the soup boils, turn off the heat.
- 6
When serving, garnish with a few sprigs of cilantro on top. Serve hot with toasted bread.

It’s funny... I made some chili last week. As I was thinking in my head, “What the hell goes in chili”? I started saying, “Wait, no. This is sounding like a beef stew”. So... I decided to make a beef stew now. It’s cold now and these dishes warm the soul. I never appreciated beef stew when I was younger. But I realize how fine of a dish it is in my older age haha. Karl -

I adjusted a recipe I had for a while to create my own taste. The key is to cook the chicken after coating it in salt, pepper, and flour. When adding it back into the pot from the plate, add it together with the meat's juices. It's good even without white vinegar. Recipe by LittleBird cookpad.japan
