Peel and slice the onion.

Place onion slices with olive oil in sauce pan on medium low heat.

For about 45 minutes, stir the onions (as constantly as possible - if not possible, just keep doing it with very small intervals) in the pan while maintaining medium low heat. The onions will soften, shrink, and become golden brown. The time is less hard set as much as you should just judge by the visuals of soft, golden onions. About 10 minutes before you think it'll be done, add mushrooms.

When it's done, add the splash of balsamic vinegar and stir it in. This will help loosen up the tiny bits that have stuck to the pan and release the flavor from those bits.

Serve on the side or on top of your main dish like steak or a burger.
