Masaledar Dal Khichdi

A perfect dish for everyone on any given day. It is a wholesome meal for us. Therefore this one occupies a very special place in our hearts. We Indians just adore this super food like crazy. This is my way of doing it and thus iam sharing with you all here. This one here is made in a cook and serve pot but I also use a pressure cooker to make it instantly as well. I also use potatoes if making for kids. This adds a huge bit of flavour and aroma.
This easy and simple dish is a pure bliss. As this is a Masala or spice one, I have used a few spices along with Green Chillies and Tomatoes too. Otherwise if made more simple and plain without these spices, it's a comfort food for the babies and the elderly. It also is a good option for those who are unwell. It gives a wholesome nourishment.

Steps
- 1
First of all soak both the rice and dal for about 20 minutes. In a cooking pot, heat ghee and add garlic mince and asafoetida.
- 2
Also add caraway seeds. Saute sliced onion now with green chillies and other spices. Add all the whole spices and the turmeric too. Saute all until onions are done. Now add tomatoes and cook until tender with a lid on.
- 3
After done, add well soaked rice and dal mix. Fry all that for a minute or two before adding water as required according to the quantity of rice taken. Keep in mind that the dal and rice mix be soaked well for about 25-30 minutes.
- 4
Adjust salt and stir in chopped coriander leaves and garam masala too. Cook on a high heat occasionally stirring to mix everything well. After about 5 minutes, add required amount of water depending on the amount of rice taken. Cover and cook on a medium high heat in a cook and serve pot like me. Fluff it up gently after done and that's it.
- 5
It will be done in 15-18 minutes in all and ready to be served with pickle, poppadums and salad. Enjoy!
