I’m happy to share my personal recipe for buñuelos. I make these often for Christmas or New Year’s—they’re delicious, easy to make, and don’t require many ingredients. This recipe is a family tradition during the holidays!

To make the cinnamon sugar: In a plate or shallow bowl, combine 6 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon. Mix well.

To make the dough: Warm 1 cup of water (it should be warm, not hot). In a large bowl, add 4 cups (about 500 grams) of all-purpose flour. Gradually add the warm water while kneading until you have a smooth ball of dough.

To fry the buñuelos: In a deep skillet, heat enough oil so the buñuelos will be fully submerged.

Divide the dough into small balls and roll each one out to your preferred size. Place the dough in the hot oil. Use a fork to poke a few small holes in each buñuelo. Watch carefully so they don’t burn, and use tongs or a fork to flip them. Spoon hot oil over the top as they fry, similar to how you would with stuffed peppers.

Once they turn golden brown and crispy, remove from the oil and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
