Place the chopped cluster beans in a bowl. Stem cook in a pressure cooker until soft. While the beans is cooking attend to other chores. Soak the toor dal in 3c of water in a bowl, about 30 minutes. Strain; add ginger, red chilies, coriander seeds; grind it to a fine paste. You may steam cook the dal paste in a steamer just as you steam idlies. I cooked it in microwave for 10 minutes. Cool and with your fingers powder it.

Remove the cooked cluster beans from the cooker.Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté mustard seeds, 1 minute. Let the seeds splutter. Stir in fennel seeds, asafetida, turmeric powder. Add curry leaves. fry for 2 minutes. Add the cooked beans. Stir fry for 5 minutes.

Add the prepared dal. Toss a few times. Add the masala powder, mix together. Add salt, continue cooking over medium low heat, 4 minutes. Turn off the stove. Usili is ready. Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves on top Taste before serving, to make sure that your dish meets with your expectations. you may serve the usili with rice. Mixed with rice, it tastes divine. good for a lunch box too
