Steps
- 1
Whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt directly inside a 350ml (12 oz) microwave-safe mug until no lumps remain.
- 2
Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Use a mini whisk or a fork to stir the mixture until it forms a smooth, thick batter. Make sure to scrape the bottom corners of the mug to catch any hidden flour pockets.
- 3
Drop the chocolate chips right into the center of the batter. Do not stir them in completely; letting them sit in the middle creates a rich, molten chocolate core as it cooks.
- 4
Place the mug in the center of your microwave. Cook on high power for 70 to 80 seconds (based on a standard 1000W microwave). The top should look set but still slightly shiny.
- 5
Let the cake cool for 2 minutes before eating. The residual heat finishes cooking the interior while keeping it incredibly moist. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Tips
Avoid overcooking: Every microwave is different. Start checking at 60 seconds. If you overcook it, the cake will quickly turn rubbery and dry.
Use a standard or large coffee mug. Avoid small, shallow teacups, or the batter will overflow and make a mess.
