My friend Martha passed away 4 years ago, but she left me many memories and some good recipes.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Add baking soda to buttermilk and let stand.

Combine shortening and sugar.

Beat until fluffy.

Add egg and bananas.

Beat until mixed.

Combine flour, baking powder and salt.

Add alternately with buttermilk mixture.

Stir in nuts.

Bake in well greased loaf pan for 55 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.

Remove and place on wire rack until cooled.

Wrap in foil to develop banana flavor.
