Soak the urad dal overnight. Next day boil the soaked dal in 3 cups of water along with 1 sliced onion, green chillies, asafoetida and salt. Set aside.

In another pan heat the oil. Add 2nd onion and fry till soft. Add ginger and garlic and fry for another couple of minutes. Add the tomatoes, cumin, coriander, red chilli powder and fry for 5-6 minutes.

Add the daal and enough water to make a gravy of thick consistency. Mix well and let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. Your dal is now ready to serve.
