Honey Baklava
A recipe that can be made vegan if you use margarine instead of butter.
Steps
- 1
Place the nuts in a blender or food processor and pulse until coarsely chopped. Do not grind them into a powder; you want small, noticeable pieces.
- 2
Add the sugar, orange liqueur, and 1/2 cup (100 grams) melted butter to the nuts and mix well.
- 3
Melt the remaining butter and preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 4
Take 5 sheets of phyllo and place them in your baking pan, trimming any excess to fit. (Keep the remaining sheets covered with a damp towel so they don't dry out while you work.)
- 5
Using a pastry brush, butter one sheet and lay it on the bottom of the pan. Repeat with the other 4 sheets, buttering each one.
- 6
Spread half of the nut filling evenly over the layered phyllo sheets.
- 7
Repeat the process with 5 more phyllo sheets and the rest of the filling.
- 8
Cover with the last 5 phyllo sheets, trimming any excess around the edges. Butter each sheet individually, then cut the baklava all the way through into diamonds or squares.
- 9
Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake until deeply golden brown.
- 10
Warm the honey, mix it with the orange blossom water, and pour it evenly over the hot baklava. Ideally, let it soak for a day before serving and enjoy!
