I made a chutney with chana dal and grated coconut that you can enjoy with idli, uttapam, dosa, or upma. It comes together quickly and tastes delicious. While it's a classic South Indian dish, everyone seems to love it.

Steps

15 minutes
  1. 1

Break open the coconut and grate half of it. Separate and thoroughly wash the curry leaves.

  2. 2

Dry roast the chana dal in a skillet for 10 minutes, then transfer to a bowl and soak in water for 2-3 hours.

  3. 3

Drain the dal and add it to a grinder with 2 green chilies and the piece of ginger. Grind to a coarse paste—do not make it too fine. Add 2 teaspoons of salt and mix well.

  4. 4

Transfer the paste to a bowl. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves to make the tempering.

  5. 5

Serve the chutney with idli, dosa, or uttapam.
