Shumai is one of the most popular types of traditional Chinese dumplings. We can use different kinds of filling ingredients such as ground pork or chicken, mushrooms, scallions, ginger, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, etc. seasoned with garlic, soy sauce, and Chinese rice wine. The filling is put in the center of the round shape wrapping and the border of the wrapping is loosely gathered above, forming a ‘neck’ and a flower shape top.

Ingredients

  • 1 packready-to-use shu mai skin (round shape)
  • For the fillings:
  • 500 grminced pork (or chicken)
  • 200 grshrimp, chopped
  • 10 grear mushrooms, soak in hot water until soft and fluffy, finely chopped
  • 4garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 stalksscallions, cut the white part only, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbspgrated ginger
  • 1 tspsesame oil
  • 1 Tbspsoy sauce
  • 1 tspsalt or according to taste
  • 1/2 tspground pepper or to taste
  • 1 Tbspcornstarch
  • 2egg whites
  • For the garnish:
  • 1grated carrot
  • some peas

Steps

  1. 1

    Combine all filling ingredients in a large bowl. Stir well.

  2. 2

    Place the dough in the middle of the shu mai skin and then shape it. Put a little grated carrot in the middle of shu mai and 1 pea.

  3. 3

    Steam for 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the shu mai.

  4. 4

    Serve warm with tomato sauce or chili sauce! 😋
