Sundal is a traditional South Indian Dish. It is made with soaked & boiled Legumes and seasoned with curry leaves, mustard seeds & freshly grated coconut.

This Simple, Easy to Make and Delightful recipe is packed with proteins. It is usually made during the festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Diwali or on any other special occasion and offered to God first.

Sundal can be prepared with many Legumes and Lentils like chickpea, Black Chana, Whole Green Moong dal, Peanuts, Corn etc.

Here, I am sharing the recipe of "Chickpea Sundal". Same recipe can be followed with other Legumes/Lentils.

Ingredients

30 mins.
4 Servings
  1. 1/2 cupChickpeas(White)
  2. 1/4freshly grated Coconut
  3. 1 tspLemon juice
  4. 1/4 cupPomegranate pearls (optional)
  5. 1 tbspchopped Coriander leaves
  6. to tasteSalt
  7. as requiredWater for soaking and cooking
  8. For the Tempering
  9. 2 tspCoconut or Groundnut Oil or Ghee
  10. 1/2 tspMustard seeds
  11. as neededFew curry leaves
  12. 1/2green chilli
  13. 1 pinchAsafoetida (optional)

Steps

30 mins.
  1. 1

    Soak Chickpea in water for at least 5-6 hours or overnight.

    Drain and Cook Chickpea with fresh water and little salt in a pressure cooker to 3-4 whistles. Then drain the water and keep aside.

    To prepare tempering, heat oil in a tadka pan. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chilli, asafoetida and let it crackle. Switch off the flame and keep aside.

    Now in a big bowl, take cooked chickpeas, add seasoning, lemin juice, pomegranate pearls, coriander leaves, grated coconut and 2 pinches of salt. Mix everything well. Chickpea Sundal is ready.
