Rich and Creamy Hot Chocolate

Is there really anything better to warm up with after an afternoon of playing in fresh snowfall on a cold winter's day?

This hot chocolate really is rich, creamy, and thick, and if you feel that it's too rich for your tastes you can substitute additional water in place of some of the milk, or even just add additional milk or water, to cut the richness.

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 oz)can sweetened condensed milk
  • 6 cupsmilk (2% or whole works best)

  • 1 cupdark chocolate chips (or semi sweet work well too)
  • 1 tspvanilla
  • 1tiny pinch salt (like, less than 1/8 tsp)

Steps

  1. 1

Place a 2 quart sauce pan on the stove over medium heat. Add sweetened condensed milk, water, milk, and cocoa powder to the pan. Whisk virgourously to thoroughly incorporate the cocoa powder. This will take some effort and the mixture will start to look frothy. You will think the cocoa powder will never blend in, but it will.

  2. 2

Heat mixture to steaming, but not simmering, wisking frequently. When steaming slowly whisk in vanilla, salt, and chocolate chips. Still, do not allow to simmer.

  3. 3

Continue cooking just below a simmer, stirring constantly, until chocolate chips are completely melted and everything is well blended (no bits of chocolate or cocoa powder remain). This usually takes about 10-15 minutes for me. If you do still see tiny particles of cocoa powder don't worry. The main thing is that you don't want it making a grainy texture.

  4. 4

Reduce heat to low to keep warm. Serve in your favorite mugs topped with marshmallows, whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a peppermint stick, or any other add-in you like with hot chocolate.

  5. 5

Note 1: Even with the water added this is still a rich and very chocolatey hot chocolate. If you feel it's too rich you can continue to add additional water to your liking.

  6. 6

Note 2: You can refrigerate any leftovers in a standard pitcher for a couple of days. We just pour into a mug cold and reheat in the microwave.

Cooking is a hobby and a passion of mine. I love cooking and trying new and different things. The best thing about cooking? I get to prepare delicious food for my family and friends that they (almost) always love! Lol.Many of my recipes are experiments in what I could make with what was available at the time. Many are simply my version of classic and/or popular dishes. A few are variations of recipes I have found elsewhere online but adjusted to our tastes. No matter what, though, each of my recipes is tried and tested before posting and I hope you find as much joy in preparing them as I do.
