Fried Tofu (Aburaage) Appetizers with Shiso, Bacon, and Cheese

I made this from what I had in my refrigerator. It was so good I thought I would share the recipe.

The sandwich is delicious as is, but you can add ponzu or gelée sauce to it as you like for a different flavour.
Instead of bacon, try ham or wiener sausages. You can use different ingredients.
You can use melting sliced cheese instead of shredded cheese if you prefer. Recipe by EnjoyKitchen.

Ingredients

2 servings
  • 2 sliceAburaage
  • 1fitting amount Easy melting cheese
  • 2 sliceSliced bacon
  • 4leaves Shiso leaves
  • 1suitable amount Ponzu or storebought gelée (as you like)

Steps

  1. 1

    Using kitchen shears, cut 3 edges of the aburaage open, leave the fourth (long side) attached. Open the aburaage and lay two shiso leaves on top.

    On top of the shiso leaves, lay the bacon and cheese. Close the aburaage up again like a sandwich.

    Toast both sides of the filled aburaage from Step 2 in a nonstick pan. It's best to cook it slowly over medium heat.

    You can also toast the sandwich in a toaster oven. Place the sandwich on a toaster oven tray, and cook for 5-10 minutes for a perfectly done snack. Aim for a lightly browned surface.
