Ingredients

1 hour total
about 30 pieces
  1. 3 3/4 cupsall-purpose flour (about 500 grams)
  2. 1 packetactive dry yeast
  3. 1 teaspoonsalt
  4. 1/2 teaspoonsugar
  5. Vegetable oil (such as sunflower oil) for frying
  6. 2 1/2 cupswater (about 600 ml), or as needed for a thick batter
  7. 1/3 cupcornstarch (about 50 grams)

    Place all the ingredients for the loukoumades in a bowl.

  2. 2

    Mix with a whisk until you have a smooth batter.

  3. 3

    Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 40 minutes, until it puffs up.

  4. 4

    Heat a pot with the vegetable oil over medium heat. Do not let the oil get too hot—about 320°F (160°C) is ideal.

  5. 5

    Fill a large glass with water and add 1 teaspoon.

  6. 6

    Once the oil is hot, dip your hand into the dough and scoop some into your palm.

  7. 7

    Using a teaspoon, take the portion of batter that comes out between your thumb and index finger and drop each one into the hot oil.

  8. 8

    Dip the spoon in the water each time before scooping the batter to prevent sticking.

  9. 9

    Fry several at a time, and when they firm up on one side, turn them over with a slotted spoon to cook the other side.

  10. 10

    Fry until golden brown, then place them on a platter lined with plenty of paper towels to drain.

    Serve with a variety of toppings.

    In my family, half are served with honey and cinnamon, and the other half with chocolate syrup... so there's no arguing 😂

    No matter how you choose to serve them, they're sure to be delicious.
