Every year on the 23rd day of the last lunar month, we prepare offerings to send the Kitchen Gods back to heaven. Even though there aren’t real carp, the sweet rice dumplings are shaped like fish, symbolizing the carp swimming. The Kitchen Gods are happy to receive these fish-shaped treats, which help them return to heaven quickly to report on the household’s good deeds.

Steps

1 hour 20 minutes
  1. 1

Mix glutinous rice flour with boiled sweet potato. Shape the mixture into balls, filling each with mashed, cooked mung beans. For the fish shapes, use the same method and press into a mold if desired. Color the balls and fish shapes as you like. Boil them in water until they float to the surface, then remove.

  2. 2

Make a sweet syrup by simmering sugar with enough water and adding julienned ginger. Add the cooked dumplings and fish shapes to the syrup. Serve in a bowl so the fish shapes appear to swim among the dumplings. Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top.

Nấu ăn đòi hỏi một sự đam mê và đặt niềm vui . Nấu ăn còn phải biết cách trình bày khi kết thúc món ăn với cách bày trí đó là một nghệ thuật sáng tạo cho người thưởng thức một cách ngon miệng, nên tôi dành tất cả sự đam mê trong nấu ănCooking requires passion and the ability to find joy in it. It also calls for the art of presentation — turning the final dish into a creative experience that delights the senses. That’s why I pour all of my passion into cooking.
