It’s no secret: Tilapia can get a bad wrap. Compared to other varieties like salmon, this fish doesn’t get the attention it rightly deserves. If you associate tilapia with being bland and boring, this easy recipe is here to change your mind—it just may become your new favorite fish. Lean, inexpensive, and ready in under 30 minutes, this is a perfect choice for a quick and easy weeknight dinner.

Steps

25 mins
  1. 1

    Step 1
wash, clean, and cut fish in half; add fish to a large bowl of buttermilk and marinate for at least 1 hour before cooking.

  2. 2

    Step 2
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, garlic powder cornstarch, onion powder, Cajun seasoning, and Italian seasoning. Whisk to combine. (you can use whatever seasonings you want)

  3. 3

    Step 3
Season tilapia filets generously with salt and pepper, then dip each in flour mixture, shaking off any excess flour. Place on a clean plate or baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow coating to adhere to the fish.

  4. 4

    Step 4
In a large, nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add 2 filets and cook 3 to 4 minutes per side, until crust is golden and fish flakes easily with a fork. Repeat with remaining filets.

  5. 5

    Step 5
Serve immediately with cilantro and lime wedges.
