A super tempting and a delicious Indian flatbread made with Bengal Gram or Chana Daal and Jaggery mainly in South India and Maharashtra on special occasions or Festivals.
We also make this in Hyderabad but in the form of Pooris called Halwa Pooris with lots of chopped Dry Fruits and Nuts. And these are deep fried too.
In this traditional dish, I did not add Jaggery and have made it with Sugar instead and have added a generous amount of chopped Almonds and Pistachios just for my family because they like it that way. The original recipe does not have any nuts in the Lentil mix. Apart from this, I have kept the recipe as it is. And have made it with a combination of both Wheat and All-purpose flours.

Melt in mouth and bursting with a whole lot of flavours, this is pure bliss. You will love it's texture. It is served with a tangy thin Aamti as an accompaniment traditionally but I have served them as it is to my children. They love it so much that they want these in their Lunchboxes and would want them more often than usual. And I have to be ready with them as usual.

Enjoy Cooking with Zeen!

Steps

35-40 minutes
  1. 1

Wash and soak daal for a good 6-7 hours or better still overnight. Rinse it thoroughly 3 to 4 times and then soak in clean drinking water and keep it covered in a cool place. Also knead a smooth and a fluffy dough out of all the ingredients as mentioned. Cover and keep it aside until use.

  2. 2

Pressure cook for 6-7 whistles using the same water in which it was soaked. After the pressure settles down, strain this water and use it for other purposes later like in the curry or while kneading a dough. And coming to the cooked daal now, add it to a non-stick pot and cook it further with cardamom powder and ghee. Keep stirring and roasting it. Scrape the sides as you roast it.

  3. 3

Also add a pinch of nutmeg powder too. Two to three tablespoon of ghee is more than enough for roasting. And as it gets roasted, a wonderful aroma emanates in the kitchen. At this point, it's almost over. The raw smell is gone and it's ready. Add lots of finely chopped nuts. It's totally my way of doing it. You needn't add it.

  4. 4

Divide the dough into your desired sized balls. Roll each into a small disc. Place about a good 3-4 tablespoon of this puran or the sweet lentil mixture on it. Cover it up and close it well and then roll into a medium sized disc as seen. This is the poli or the flatbread. Roast each on a low to medium high heat with a generous amount of ghee or the clarified butter.

Make all in the same way. Serve them piping hot to your loved ones on any day. Enjoy! Yum!

Homemaker by choice and a passionate cook by heart. An aspiring cook who actually never knew anything about Cooking until i became a mother myself. With Motherhood came the responsibilities as well and this was the turning point in my life.I started to learn the ABC's of cooking, taking help from my mother and my MIL. And time just flew. I spread my wings higher and higher. With my love for excellence and innovation, i stepped into a world of homecooks with my exposure to Cookpad one fine day on the social media. And there was no looking back since then and i have not only shared recipes here on this wonderful platform but also have made some lovely friends as well. Today iam successful because of my hard work, dedication and loads of good wishes of my family and my kids in particular.
