A quick and easy Xacuti Goan Chicken Gravy made with Goan Xacuti Masala (Store Brought).

Ingredients

  1. 1 kgChicken Pieces (bone/boneless)
  2. 2large Onion chopped
  3. 2medium Potatoes (peeled, cubes)
  4. 4 tbspoil
  5. 3-4 tbspGoan Xacuti Masala
  6. 1.5-2 cupscoconut milk
  7. 1 tsp or as needed Salt
  8. 1/4 tspGaram masala (optional)
  9. 1 tbsp or as needed finely chopped Coriander Leaves for garnishing
  10. Ingredients for Green Masala Paste for marinate :-
  11. 3green chillies
  12. 3/4 cupCoriander leaves
  13. 5-6Pudina (Mint) leaves
  14. 1-2 sprigsCurry leaves
  15. as neededvery little Water to make paste
  16. Other ingredients for marinate:-
  17. 2 tbspginger-garlic paste
  18. 1/2 tspTurmeric Powder
  19. 1/4 tsp or as needed salt
  20. Ingredients for Roasted Onion-Coconut Paste:-
  21. 1.5 cupsgrated coconut (fresh/dry)
  22. 1 tspoil
  23. 2medium size Onion slices
  24. 1 tspPoppy seeds
  25. As neededWater to make paste
  26. Ingredients for Tamarind pulp:-
  27. 1small lemon size Tamarind ball
  28. 3-4 tbspwater

Steps

Cook time 40-45 mins
  1. 1

    For Green Chutney Paste:-
    Add coriander leaves, pudina leaves, green chillies, curry leaves in a mixer grinder jar. Add very little water and grind to make a fine green paste.

    For Marination:-
    Wash and drain the chicken pieces well for 2-3 times. First marinate the Chicken with 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste, ½ tsp turmeric powder and ¼ tsp salt.

    Then add green chutney paste and marinate chicken with it. Keep this marinated chicken aside for at least 30 mins to an hour.

    To make Roasted Onion-Coconut Paste:- Dry roast grated coconut in a nonstick pan until light brown. Then transfer it to a bowl. Now in the same pan add 1 tsp oil and fry the onions till light brown. Then add 1 teaspoon of poppy seeds and fry for a minute.

    Put roasted onion and poppy seeds in a bowl containing the roasted coconut. After its cools, put the mixture in a mixer grinder, add some little water and make a coarse paste of onion-coconut.

    For tamarind paste:- Soak 1 small lemon size tamarind ball in 3-4 tbsp of water. Then strained and take tamarind pulp.

    Preparation of Gravy:- Heat 4 tbsp oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan. Add chopped onion and saute until soft, do not brown. Add marinated chicken, potato cubes and saute for 2 minutes. Cover and cook for 6-8 minutes.

    Chicken naturally contains water and during the cooking process, this moisture can be released as steam or liquid. Also chicken is marinated with a liquid based marinade, the mixture will begin to release water.

    Then remove the lid and add the onion-coconut paste, 4 tbsp of Goan Xacuti Masala powder (add 3 tbsp first and increase if needed). Mix well.

    Add coconut milk, strained tamarind pulp. I used homemade coconut milk. Adjust the gravy consistency as per your preference for thicker or thinner gravy. Cover and cook on medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes until chicken and potatoes are fully cooked.

    Then add salt, garam masala. Check seasoning, add Xacuti masala and salt if needed, to taste. Cook for another 5 minutes.

    Finally garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Simmer for 1-2 mins. Turn off the gas. Xacuti Goan Chicken Gravy is ready to serve.
