A quick and easy Xacuti Goan Chicken Gravy made with Goan Xacuti Masala (Store Brought).
Traditionally Goan Xacuti sauce or gravy is prepared with spices like black pepper, turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, chopped onions, toasted grated coconut, poppy seeds and large dry red chillies. This sauce will be served or prepared with fish, crab, chicken, lamb or beef.

A quick and easy Xacuti Goan Chicken Gravy made with Goan Xacuti Masala (Store Brought).
Traditionally Goan Xacuti sauce or gravy is prepared with spices like black pepper, turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, chopped onions, toasted grated coconut, poppy seeds and large dry red chillies. This sauce will be served or prepared with fish, crab, chicken, lamb or beef.

For Green Chutney Paste:-
Add coriander leaves, pudina leaves, green chillies, curry leaves in a mixer grinder jar. Add very little water and grind to make a fine green paste. - 2
For Marination:-
Wash and drain the chicken pieces well for 2-3 times. First marinate the Chicken with 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste, ½ tsp turmeric powder and ¼ tsp salt. - 3
Then add green chutney paste and marinate chicken with it. Keep this marinated chicken aside for at least 30 mins to an hour.

To make Roasted Onion-Coconut Paste:- Dry roast grated coconut in a nonstick pan until light brown. Then transfer it to a bowl. Now in the same pan add 1 tsp oil and fry the onions till light brown. Then add 1 teaspoon of poppy seeds and fry for a minute.

Put roasted onion and poppy seeds in a bowl containing the roasted coconut. After its cools, put the mixture in a mixer grinder, add some little water and make a coarse paste of onion-coconut.

For tamarind paste:- Soak 1 small lemon size tamarind ball in 3-4 tbsp of water. Then strained and take tamarind pulp.

Preparation of Gravy:- Heat 4 tbsp oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan. Add chopped onion and saute until soft, do not brown. Add marinated chicken, potato cubes and saute for 2 minutes. Cover and cook for 6-8 minutes.

Chicken naturally contains water and during the cooking process, this moisture can be released as steam or liquid. Also chicken is marinated with a liquid based marinade, the mixture will begin to release water.

Then remove the lid and add the onion-coconut paste, 4 tbsp of Goan Xacuti Masala powder (add 3 tbsp first and increase if needed). Mix well.

Add coconut milk, strained tamarind pulp. I used homemade coconut milk. Adjust the gravy consistency as per your preference for thicker or thinner gravy. Cover and cook on medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes until chicken and potatoes are fully cooked.

Then add salt, garam masala. Check seasoning, add Xacuti masala and salt if needed, to taste. Cook for another 5 minutes.

Finally garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Simmer for 1-2 mins. Turn off the gas. Xacuti Goan Chicken Gravy is ready to serve.
