Wash the chestnuts. Use a small sharp knife to cut a cross into the rounded side of each chestnut shell, then soak them in water for 30 minutes.

After soaking, drain the chestnuts and dry them with a towel. Pour the salt into a skillet to cover the bottom, then place the chestnuts on top of the salt. Cover with a lid and cook for 25 minutes, turning the chestnuts occasionally.

Peel the chestnuts while they are still warm and serve.
