Ingredients

40 minutes
20-25 pieces (2 baking sheets, spaced apart)
  1. Dry ingredients:
  2. 3 cupsflour (about 375 grams)
  3. 1/2 cupsugar (about 100 grams)
  4. 1/2 teaspoonsalt
  5. 1 1/4 teaspoonsbaking powder
  6. 1/2 teaspoonbaking soda
  7. 1 1/4 teaspoonsground cinnamon
  8. 1/2 teaspoonground cloves
  9. 1 packetvanilla sugar or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  10. Wet ingredients:
  11. 1large juicy orange (blended into a puree)
  12. 1/2 cupolive oil (about 120 ml)
  13. 1/2 cupsunflower or corn oil (about 120 ml)
  14. 3 tablespoonsbrandy
  15. 1/4 cuporange juice (about 60 ml)
  16. Syrup:
  17. 1 1/2 cupssugar (about 300 grams)
  18. 1 1/2 cupswater (about 360 ml)
  19. 3heaping tablespoons honey
  20. 1cinnamon stick
  21. Topping:
  22. Extra honey
  23. 2/3 cupwalnuts (about 80 grams)

Steps

    ▪️Blend the walnuts in a blender and set aside.
    ▪️Prepare the orange: wash it very well, cut it in half, remove the seeds, and blend until smooth.
    ▪️For the syrup, bring all the syrup ingredients to a boil until the sugar and honey are fully dissolved. Set aside, leaving the cinnamon stick in.

    ▪️Mix all the dry ingredients together.
    ▪️In a separate bowl, combine all the wet ingredients, then gradually add the dry mixture.
    ▪️Mix just until combined—do not overwork the dough.
    ▪️Shape the melomakarona into small oval logs (like the ones shown to the left of the grater in the photo) and gently press them for a pattern using a grater.
    ▪️Place them on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
    ▪️Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for about 25 minutes, depending on your oven. (They should be slightly crisp.)

    ▪️Dip the cookies in the syrup in batches, about 2 minutes per batch.
    ▪️Place them in a dish, making sure they don’t overlap.
    ▪️If you have leftover syrup, drizzle it over the cookies.
    ▪️Grandma’s secret: drizzle a little extra honey over the top.
    ▪️Sprinkle with the walnuts.
    ▪️Once completely cooled after a few hours, they’re ready to serve and can be stacked. Enjoy!
